Mining & Extraction Operations
Crew coordination, safety compliance, and payment processing in underground and remote mine sites
The Problem
Mining operations — open-pit, underground, and extraction sites — combine the worst communication challenges: remote locations far from cellular infrastructure, underground environments that block all radio signals, and safety-critical operations where communication failures risk lives. Miners working underground are completely cut off from surface communication using conventional methods. Surface operations at remote mine sites face cellular dead zones across the entire mining lease. Equipment maintenance, shift coordination, supply ordering, and emergency communication all require driving to the nearest town or installing expensive private radio infrastructure. Safety regulations (MSHA in the U.S.) require communication capability for emergency notification, but compliance is expensive when the mine site is 50+ miles from the nearest cell tower. Contractor and vendor payments require internet connectivity that may not exist at the mine site, creating payment delays that strain supplier relationships.
How M6:6 Solves It
M6:6 provides communication and commerce capability across the entire mining operation. Surface operations use the satellite SMS bridge for shift coordination, supply ordering, equipment status reporting, and safety check-ins — no cell coverage required. Underground operations use mesh-capable relay nodes at portal entries and ventilation shafts to bridge underground crews to the satellite-connected surface network. P139 Safety provides MSHA-compliant emergency notification with automatic no-movement detection for lone workers and confined space entrants. The Mite POS processes contractor payments, equipment purchases, and supply orders at the mine site without internet — critical for operations where the nearest bank or cell tower is hours away. Queue Burst handles the intermittent connectivity of mobile mining equipment (haul trucks, dozers, drills) that moves in and out of satellite visibility as terrain changes. Mustard Chain provides tamper-evident safety inspection logs for regulatory compliance documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work underground?
Direct satellite communication does not work underground. However, M6:6's architecture supports mesh relay nodes placed at portal entries, ventilation shafts, and underground communication points that bridge messages from underground crew phones to the satellite-connected surface network. Underground coverage depends on relay node placement and mine layout. Surface operations have full satellite coverage everywhere with an unobstructed sky view.
How does this meet MSHA emergency notification requirements?
P139 Safety provides automatic no-movement detection (configurable timeout: 5-60 minutes), manual emergency activation, and GPS-tagged emergency alerts transmitted via satellite. These capabilities support MSHA 30 CFR Part 49 emergency notification requirements. All emergency events are logged in a tamper-evident Mustard Chain ledger for regulatory documentation. Consult your MSHA compliance officer for specific regulatory applicability.
Can we process contractor payments at the mine?
Yes. The Mite POS processes payments to any debit card, credit card, or bank account via satellite. Contractor invoices, equipment rental payments, and supply purchases can be settled on-site without driving to cell coverage. Tamper-evident transaction records provide audit documentation for accounting and tax compliance.
